Punk Leonardo and Punk Raphael (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Punk Leonardo and Punk Raphael
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)A few months back, NECA and Target's Haulathon gave us a set of Ninja Turtles dressed up in clothes befitting late-80s teenagers in the city. Not the most exciting set, but it was a much-desired look for the brothers, and I liked how they turned out. It wasn't the only time they wore such outfits, and this new two-pack of Leonardo of Raphael depicts them in the punk disguises they had in "Enter the Shredder," as they were different from the Usagi Yojimbo episode. I guess that's why Donatello and Michelangelo received a set of unique outfits earlier this year.

The main thing to note about this set before I get in-depth with it is that it's like 80% reused/repainted molds. Leo and Raph both have the same head sculpt, wearing shades instead of masks, and with big smiles on their faces. The lenses are a brighter color, but other than that, they're completely unchanged. I would've loved it if they included a set of two-piece heads with these two to compensate for the recycled tooling. The punk four-pack gave us a set of rocker hair heads from one of the European vacation episodes, so why couldn't these have anything similar? The Turtles in Disguise heads could've easily been reused here with the new color scheme, with an angry head for Leo and happy head for Raph, but I'm really just venting here. Removable sunglasses at least would've been nice.

So what's the main difference here? The colors of the jacket for the pair were different between the two episodes they wore them, with Leonardo having a rust-colored jacket, and Raphael having a white one. Although Leo was barely visible in this specific outfit, NECA got the colors right… except for the shoes. The blue color is fitting for him, but Mikey was the one with blue shoes; Leo's were black. Raphael's shoes don't match the episode either, but the shade of red (and blue) is different here. His jacket is also missing paint apps, with no gray for the studs and zipper, despite Leo not having the same issue. On the more positive side, the paint is clean, with no noticeable bleed or slop, and I don't mind that NECA is doing less and less cel-shading with this line, since they rarely got it right.

Like usual, the turtles stand 5 1/2" tall, and the articulation is unchanged from the other punk set. Both Leo and Raph have a barbell head, neck, and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, double-hinged elbows and knees, and bicep and thigh rotation. There were no issues moving the joints here, but Leo's left arm likes to pop out at the shoulder, an issue the other Punk Leo didn't have. It's great the toon brothers are finally getting double-jointed elbows in this scale, and with the recent Archie four-pack having such joints (and pinless at that), it has me hoping the regular brothers will be redone at some point with them. The ankles can't go too far forward, but that's the only limitation with these sculpts.

The accessories, while fitting, are almost all reused molds. The only newly sculpted things in this set are the teddy bear, lamp, and baseball bat. They're nice extras, fitting well with dioramas, including the Turtle Lair if you were willing to drop three hundred big boys + taxes and shipping on it, and that bat will go great with Bebop and Rocksteady and their gang. The grocery bag and pizza are lifted from the previous punk set, with a new color scheme for the groceries, and the opening pizza box is here again, now with a rather generic "Pizza" logo. There's two more VHS tapes, with green and pink labels, and the skateboard from the Turtles in Disguise set, but with a red stripe and wheels, and no turtle shell graphic (you can tell where it's supposed to be with the unsculpted lines in the middle). There's open and closed communicators as well, but for some reason, they reused the ones from Zach, with holes in the bottom of them. Lastly, there's pairs of flat and thumbs-up hands to go with the vertically-hinged grips on the figures. Wish there were more hand options than these, but I can live, mainly cause I have a ton of turtle hands already.

There's admittedly not much to this set, since it's mostly reused stuff with only three new things, and it's a missed opportunity for new heads and/or hands. But if you're a completionist or die-hard TMNT fan like me who wants these episode-specific looks, I'd say go right ahead and get them. If you want something a little more exciting though, just scout out the four-pack. Chances are it's still in stock at least one nearby Target.
