Pizza Tossin' Leo Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Collection (Playmates)While most of the best TMNT figures this year have come from NECA, Playmates, the originator of Turtle toys, has been keeping up as well. In addition to their Mutant Mayhem line, they've been reissuing certain older figures, including the unexpected return of 3/4 of the Pizza Tossin' Turtles. I covered Raphael a while back, and now it's high time I cover the remaining two. As discussed with Raphael, the turtles in this sub-line have very strange designs. Like him, Leonardo has bug eyes and a big grin, but with his tongue sticking out. There's a lot of shared tooling with not just Raph, but the other turtles. I assume that's why they chose to reissue these, as the shared parts likely keeps costs down. Aside from the head, Leo has a few other unique parts, with his pizza launcher resembling a deep dish pizza rather than an oven, and his pizza bag resembles two turtles munching on a pizza. The paint is fine on him with good colors, but the edges could've handled better. Then we have Michelangelo. He too is 80% shared tooling, but he gets my favorite head sculpt out of these figures, munching on a slice of pepperoni pizza (I personally prefer mac & cheese pizza, especially if it has bacon bits). Like Leo, his launcher is a pizza, but a regular flat one on what I assume is a bunch of cheese stacked on a pie, and his bag is a just a big hunk of cheese. The colors of these guys are lifted over from the regular turtles, and Mikey has my favorite color scheme, but he too could use cleaner edges. Both figures are around 5" tall, and move at the head, shoulders, wrists, and hips. The pizza launching feature will only work if the right arm is in the correct position, but I assure you it works great. Moving onto accessories, neither gets much, but they still come with pretty unique weapons. Leonardo has a little "crusty" katana, with some weird bit of plastic that plugs it into the launcher. He's supposed to hold that handle thing, but he can hold the katana itself as well. There's also a garlic powder blaster, which is a weird extra, but these figures are already strange enough, so may as well give him that thing. As for Mikey, he has nunchucks, of course, and they can peg into the bottom of the launcher. He also has a weird cheese grater weapon, similar to Leo's thingy. Lastly, both get six pizzas each to launch out of their chests, all bearing the same sticker. The return of the Pizza Tossin' Turtles is quite unexpected, and whilst Walmart-only, they're fun figures to have. If you're into weird and unique figures and collectibles like I am, then you'll want to pick these up. It's too bad Donatello isn't included with these, and he really should, because I've had little luck searching for the original. - 12/19/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
