Hyacinth Hippo (Fantasia) (Disney (Super7)) Review
Hyacinth Hippo (Fantasia)
Disney (Super7) (Super7)Disney's musical film Fantasia was composed of all sorts of memorable segments, ranging from Mickey Mouse as the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" to the terrifying Chernabog, as well as "Dance of the Hours," a display of the company's love of anthropomorphic animals. One of such animals is the lovely Hyacinth Hippo, proving that even the largest animals in the wild are graceful dancers, at least in cartoons.

Continuing the Disney Ultimates line's trend of giving everyone a unique package, Hyacinth has a primarily purple and pink color scheme for her box, with lovingly painted character artwork and a bio on back. There's only a single twist-tie and a few bits of tape to worry about, and they can be cut out easily for everything to be removed and replaced with no hassle. The slip cover is a gold color with a sparkly trail, similar to Mickey's box. Hyacinth has a massive box, so make sure to make room for it.

Hyacinth looks exactly like how a hippo should, except she has eyelashes so you know it's a girl. Sculpted by Four Horsemen Studios, Hyacinth has a neutral, somewhat seductive expression, accurate to her appearance in the film, and it's all solid plastic. In addition to that, she has two extra heads: one with an open mouth, and another with a wider open mouth. The paint is fine on them with consistent finish, but fuzzy edges.

At 8 1/4" tall, Hyacinth is a large, chunky figure, appropriate for someone of her species. She's hollow plastic rather than a solid hunk, but doesn't feel cheaply made, which is a plus. The body is well-made, with sculpted folds and creases, including soft plastic for the neck to keep it from limiting movement, and the joints are integrated well into the sculpt. The contrasting brown and pink colors don't blend well together, given the somewhat bluish edges, but at least the figure has a less glossy finish than most figures I've seen from this line so far. That issue isn't present with the yellow slippers, thankfully, and the tutu is a softgoods piece, setting it apart from the rest of the figure.

While the articulation is a little different from most Ultimates, Hyacinth still poses very well. The head and waist are both single ball-joints with plenty of range, which are good for a variety of dancing poses, but one downside is that the waist can't lean forward, only backwards and side-to-side. There are swivel/hinge joints for the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles, and while a little tight at first, they work well, save for the ankles which have some looseness at the rocker swivel. The knees are hard to describe; they can swivel, but also have a very little amount of bend. I assume they have hinge joints, but the design of the legs prevent them from bending. You can get Hyacinth on one foot, but you'll need to work with her a bit to get her balanced.

There's plenty of ways to display Hyacinth, thanks to all of her extra parts. As mentioned, she comes with three different heads, but you'll want to heat up the plastic to swap them, as the sockets are rather tight. She gets plenty of hands too, with a pair of splayed hands, a pair of relaxed hands, two extra right hands - bent up but non-splayed fingers and gripping, and two extra left hands - slightly gestured, holding a bunch of grapes, and holding a powder puff. The hands swap with ease, and the powder puff hand has a removable lid, with an actual puff inside. To go with the gripping hand, she gets a handheld mirror to hold. It has a reflective sticker like Prince John's mirror, a nice touch that not only makes accessories like these better, but reminds me of Palisades' Muppets line. To round things out, Hyacinth gets a pink tutu and pair of feet and turn her into one of the various hippo dancers from the source material. While the tutus swap easily thanks to velcro, you will want to heat up the extra feet to make them fit.

Compared to the Robin Hood and Alice figure from this wave I got previously, Hyacinth is far more solid. She looks great, poses great, comes with plenty of interchangeable parts, and the alternate pink clothing articles gives you a reason to army build should you be able to find some for good deals. While I probably won't be doing that, I do plan on getting Ben Ali Gator when he comes out to complement her.
