Stridor (Masters of the Universe - Origins) Review
Stridor
Masters of the Universe - Origins (Mattel)Well, it's Stridor. Never the most exciting toy, but I really wanted that base, so I jumped on it when it hit deep clearance. Did it surprise me? Read on.
Right off the bat, it's got a lot on the old one. Side by side, the legs are slightly chunkier to accommodate the articulation, making it look a lot beefier despite the torso actually being a touch narrower this time around. That's 3 balljoints in the neck,3 hinges for each leg, and a spring-loaded hinge in the jaw to grip the bit. That's unexpected.
I take issue with the color, though. It's got a more reddish sort of brown, and the legs, seat, and rear gun have gone from caramel to orange. Less war machine and more parade float, really. Kudos for the old-school stickers, though. Eat it, Classics version!
Unlike the rather disappointing Panthor, this thing can at least manage the same pose as the old one.
Accessory-wise, we get a pretty decent spread for a vehicle. The classic headgear is there, along with a red version of the one they invented for Classics Night Stalker. Both look great. The aforementioned bridle is a cord with plastic handles and a bit in the middle. Very nice work there, I was worried it would be all plastic. Three blast effects round out the add-ons, but they're almost too chunky to look good, nearly bumping against the neck.
The base is honestly kind of odd: a section of Greyskull cobblestones, and a couple low fence sections of different heights. Part of a training course? Package says it attaches to Castle Greyskull, but what they mean is "tucks partly under the unsightly gap beneath the floor and leaves no room for a rider". Never change, Mattel.
The clear arm that plugs into it does include a hinge where it plugs into Stridor's belly, allowing for some really good rearing and galloping poses, including low jumps. For once, a horse toy that can do more than stand around with some slight variations in its pose! Praise... what gods exist in MOTU? Praise the Goddess, I guess.
Anyway, your mileage may vary, but if you can get past the bright colors- and the slavish obedience to the vintage aesthetic- it's absolutely worth it, preferably on some sort of sale. I got it exclusively to add a sort of safety rail around the elevator (it really was that cheap), but honestly? This thing might just end up on the shelf after all. Now, where's my Fisto?.....
