Ace Duck (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7)) Review
Ace Duck
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)While I enjoy Super7's Ultimates, I'll admit they're overpriced. At $55 each for most figures, the inconsistent quality and occasional lack of accessories make it hard to justify the price. It looks like retailers such as Entertainment Earth realized this, and began marking them down. Ace Duck is one of those, and he's only around $24 there. I didn't get mine through them, but rather during a sale at my local comic store for only $30. Now why can't every Ultimate be that cheap?

Ace Duck has a pretty weird expression, wide-eyed with gritted teeth. Is he supposed to be eager or nervous? It's what the original figure had, though, and Four Horsemen did a good job with him. The pilot's cap is a separate piece, and it fits snugly on his head. They went ahead and gave him an extra head, and it's much cooler. The alternate head has a more determined expression that reads "Shell yeah!," chomping on a cigar and wearing traditional aviator headgear. I feel like this is something S7 and the Horsemen came up with on their own, and it fits Ace's character well.

Ace is surprisingly short, at 5 3/4" tall without the hat. He's smaller than the turtles, when I would've preferred him to be taller by at least an extra half-inch. The sculpt looks great, though, especially with the textured feathers. The jacket is a separate layer of soft plastic over the torso, and the wings are separated from him in-box. The tail can also be removed, plugging into the back. My other main complaint with Ace is the paint. The colors are different from the renders, with an oddly light jacket and hat, weird orange wash on the feathers, and inconsistent colors between the beak and feet. I wish they took another look at the paint before going into production, because they could've made him look so much nicer. I like how he still has the Turtles symbol on the jacket though.

What they did do well is articulation, with plenty of nice joints. The head is a barbell like usual, but the range is nice, especially with the forward tilt. The arms get swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, along with swivel biceps. The waist turns, but gets some forward tilt as well, and I'm not sure if it's a ball-joint or a mere swivel. Below it are swivel/hinge hips, knees, and ankles, and swivel thighs and calves. The wings are also swivel/hinge joints, but as mentioned earlier, they are separate from the figure and need to be plugged into the back. It takes a little force, but can be done, though I'd advising heating up the back if you're having trouble.

Ace gets plenty of good accessories, such as the alternate head. I love how it looks, and they swap easily. In addition to the hat, there's a pair of goggles that go with the extra head, and they slide on easily thanks to the rubbery material. Five pairs of hands are included - gripping, gun grip (vertically hinged), grasping, relaxed, and closed - and they swap easily. In case you don't want to display with the wings, there's an alternate jacket with no holes in the back. Returning from the original figure are a pistol and a bandolier with four egg grenades, and the bandolier can be made tighter on the figure, but the peg likes to pop out easily. New weapons include a tommy gun and two extra grenades, and Ace looks great with them. Lastly, there's an unpainted weapon sprue, designed to resemble plane wheels. It's pointless, but at least they made it look unique.

Ace has both his ups and down: the sculpt, articulation, and accessories are all good, but he's too short, and the paint could be better. Still, he's one of the funner TMNT Ultimates, and while full price is okay for him, I'd still recommend trying to get him for less.
