April O 'Neil (Mutant Interest Storm) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
April O 'Neil (Mutant Interest Storm)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)It's been a few years since we got a regular cartoon April from NECA. She was one of the first releases from the line, but at the time, the figures were hard to get ahold of, especially in MD. Now, NECA has listened to fans and brought her back, better than ever and easier to get!

The original April came in a two-pack with a battle-damaged Foot Soldier, but the new version is a single release, coming in one of the FHE-inspired boxes. The artwork isn't anything too special, with April on the Turtles' TV on the front and her interviewing Aunt Aggie on the back, but it fits the character, and looks nice overall. As usual, there's a lot of plastic ties to cut out, so get your scissors ready.

The main issue everyone had with the original April was that her head was way out of proportion with her body; that issue's been fixed here, with a smaller, nicer-looking head. This version actually gets three heads: the default head is a neutral expression, but there's also an open-mouth smiling head with different-looking hair, calling to mind the inconsistent animation of the show to me, and a head with a blindfold on, which makes sense given April plays the damsel in distress quite frequently. The new heads were sculpted by Tomasz Rozejowski, and if you're following him on Twitter or Instagram, you'd know he does great work with animated characters.

April's torso has been redone to be a little taller, but the arms and legs seem to be recycled from the original sculpt by Trevor Zammit. Some people have complained about her neck being too long in promo pics, but in-hand, it's not an issue, and the sculpt overall looks great. Though at 5 7/8", she's still too small, and should be s head taller than the Turtles. The paint is greatly improved, with bolder colors and sharper lines, and it helps that Tomasz was involved in that department as well. It's not without its issues, as there's a small mark on her breast and with some chipped-off paint around the right knee.

The articulation remains unchanged, as April gets a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, double swivel/hinge shoulders, ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, and double-hinged knees. All of the joints move well, but there are two issues. The first is the head, the joint is very snug inside the neck, and as a result, gets barely any tilt. The alternate heads swap with little resistance, so that's a positive at least. The second issue is the right knee again, as it has a janked-up lower pin that doesn't go through the leg all the way, and while it doesn't affect movement, it still looks awkward.

Being a single release this time around benefits April, as she gets a ton of accessories. For starters, everything from the original release is kept, so you're not missing anything. There's two microphones, one of which is attached to a recorder, a video camera with moving handle, an opening communicator, a baby Pizza Monster, the "Maltese Hamster," and sets of relaxed and gripping hands. What's new here in addition to the two extra heads are four extra sets of hands - style pose, pointing, thumbs up, and peace sign - along with a venus fly trap, the Doku plant (reused from the Splinter/Baxter set), a photo of Aunt Aggie, a "Hare and the Tortoise" book (reused from the Turtles in Disguise set), and a weird clamp that opens up to fit around her chest. All of the extras should be recognizable to most fans of the old show (I need to do a rewatch some time), and help make for an interesting display.

While April isn't perfect, she's still a big improvement over her first version, with a better sculpt and colors, along with plenty of accessories. It's also good for those who missed out on the previous release, and while you aren't getting a Foot Soldier with this one, she's still fun on her own. In the end, I'm just happy to finally have the main cast completed.
