Triceraton Zog Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)While the TMNT cartoon line NECA's been doing is fun, I feel the relaunched Mirage line is shaping up to be my current favorite, thanks to the great sculpts and unique character selection. We've already gotten a few Triceratons in the toon line, but the Mirage line has one that tops all three of them. The Triceratons appeared in a short story arc early on in the comic, but one of them, Zog, reappeared in the "Return to New York" three-parter. The sculpt for him was provided by Gurjeet Singh, in what appears to be his first work for NECA, and he nailed it. The skin has a scaly texture like a dinosaur would have, along with various bumps and warts. He looks very menacing with red eyes and gritted teeth, and the hinged jaw allows for more expressiveness to the sculpt. The paint on the skin employs a mixture of black "ink" lines and wash, giving it both a comic look and some realism. At 8" tall, Zog is a big, chunky figure, and he's all solid plastic as well, making him a hefty guy in-hand. He's got a purple suit with various rips and tears, notably missing the sleeves aside from their cuffs. His suit also has a lot of wrinkles, and altogether, the figure looks amazing. The paint on the body is mostly good, but there is some rub-off from the belt onto the torso. Move him around a bit and you'll see what I mean. The joints are still painted, of course, and posing him will cause that paint to flake off, resulting in a lighter color on them than the skin. I wish NECA would have sculpted the joints in the same color as the paint, rather than painting over them. The usual articulation is present here, and then some. Zog gets a barbell-jointed head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles, and tail, swivel biceps and thighs, ball-jointed hips, and a bendy wire in the tail. Although his build restricts his elbows and knees, all of the joints move fluidly, and he can take many poses. The only area of tightness was the biceps, but those broke free easily. In addition to the hinged jaw, Zog also gets a ball-jointed tongue, making him even more expressive. Zog doesn't have tens of thousands of accessories, but they all fit with his appearance in the comics. For starters, he gets a laser blaster, and it's not reused from Fugitoid; this one is larger and more colorful, and looks much cooler. His other weapons include a machete and three grenades: two round and one cylindrical. There's no way to attach the grenades to the belt, sadly, but he can hold them well. There's also four sets of hands: open, gripping, tight grips, and closed. They swap easily, and can hold his weapons well. However, the left tight grip is really tight, and you'll need to heat it up to fit the machete in it. Both of his wide grips can be used for two-handed blaster poses, but his sculpt prevents him from doing so. Zog may just be my favorite figure in the Mirage line so far. He's a hefty figure that looks and poses great, and gets some nice accessories as well. He's a bit on the higher side when it comes to price, being $50-60 depending on where you find him, but he's worth every penny. Now how about some generic Triceraton army builders? - 6/21/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
