Foot Soldier (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7)) Review
Foot Soldier
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)While NECA has been doing quite a lot of good with the TMNT license, Super7 has also been handling the line well this year. Their ReAction figures are cool, but their ultimates are what everyone really wants. The first wave started shipping out back in September, and I managed to pre-order one. In this case, it's the Foot Soldier, one of Shredder's robotic henchmen.

I pre-ordered the figure from Big Bad Toy Store when it was still up for $45, but it doesn't look like they'll get any extra in stock, so you'll have to look for the first wave at other retailers.

PACKAGING

The packaging is a big window box with a brick texture and a bio on the back, all inside a purple slip cover with a manhole cover on it. If you've seen my review for the SDCC-exclusive Baxter, you'll know what I'm talking about. Of course, it looks great, and it'll look nice both with or without the slip cover. There's only a single twist tie inside the plastic tray, and the fewer of those, the better.

SCULPT

One thing to note about the figure designs in this line is that they're based off of the original Playmates figures, but upscaled and updated for the modern age. The Foot Soldier here definitely looks great, with much of the same aspects as the original one from 1988, though I will say that the head looks better on this guy than his predecessor. Soft plastic is used in a few areas, mainly the bottom of the shirt, allowing for less restriction on the articulation. Needless to say, Super7 did a good job replicating the old figure.

This figure stands directly 7" tall, and since he's only a little bit bigger than the NECA toon Foot, he'll fit in with them well.

PAINT

Much like the sculpt, the colors here are based off of the old figure, and they look very nice on the new one. The paint job itself is very clean, with no slop or bleed at all. The hues are a bit different, however, with the pants being a more dusty blue color than the solid blue on the original figure, but I don't have a problem with it. If anything, the colors here are better than the original one.

ARTICULATION

The ball-jointed head and neck both work well together, allowing it to look in many different directions. The arms have swivel/hinge joints at the shoulders, elbows, and wrists, as well as swivel biceps. Having elbows that swivel make the biceps redundant, but getting articulation at the latter allows for more natural arm poses. I'd recommend heating up the elbows before moving them, since mine were stuck tight when I first got the figure.

The waist is a swivel joint, though it does tilt a little bit on mine, but I doubt it's a ball joint. Below that are swivel/hinge joints at the hips, knees, and ankles, as well as swivels at the thighs and top of the boots. I'd be careful when working with the hips, since the post connecting them to the pelvis is pretty thin, but I don't think they'll be any fear of breakage as long as you handle the hip and thigh joints carefully. I noticed that the more you move them, the easier it gets to do so.

Unlike the rest of the figures in the wave, the Foot Soldier has no peg holes in the feet, but he shouldn't have any trouble standing up.

ACCESSORIES

Super7 really went all out with the accessories with this figure, though how else could you justify a $45 price point?

There's four extra sets of hands to go with the grips the Foot comes wearing. There's a pair of fists, a pair of "karate-chopping" hands, a pair of relaxed hands, and a pair of gestured hands. All of them swap out easily, and allow for more display options.

The accessories the original figure had are replicated here, including the knife, "electro-shock" mace, and shell biter. With the original, they were all solid gray plastic, but here they're a bit more colorful. But that's not all. What's new with this one are two shurikens, and two different firearms. The shurikens are made out of a glossy plastic, and the firearms are based right off of the original cartoon series. I do wish the guns were more colorful, however.

One more extra included here is a unpainted weapons rack, a nice callback to the original toy line. It's a nice addition, but not some super interesting.

QUALITY

Sure, the joints are a little tight, but this figure is still pretty well-made. The paint job is excellent as well, and needless to say, Super7 sure well all out with this guy.

VALUE

Let's face it, $45 is lot more than the typical NECA or McFarlane figure, but with the high count of accessories and great quality, it's quite worth it. However, it was $45 when you could still pre-order it, but now the main price for retailers is $60, which also isn't a price to be super excited about. So good luck getting it for a decent value nowadays. I don't mind the cost, but I do think $40 is a more acceptable price.

OVERALL

I love the Baxter, but I love this guy even more. Great sculpt and paint, as well as plenty of useful articulation and a huge amount of accessories, make this one of the best figures I have purchased. I do wish the price was a bit lower, however.

The two figure I have so far I love a lot, so much that I went ahead and pre-ordered the entire second wave from BBTS a while back. It may cost me a lot, but with how great this figure and Baxter were, I sure won't regret it.
