Legolas (Mirkwood) Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Fellowship of the Ring - Series 4 Rated 3.90 stars by Deaditor Super articulated with a reasonable bow, but he is way too tall has hands down the worst headsculpt/ paint job on the head of all the Legolas figures and his daggers are softer plastic making them bend more and his arrows are terrible and should be replaced with the basic Legolas figures. I’d recommend this figure definitely but I’d use heat to pop off the boots then slice off the swivel and some of the upper leg then re-attach to get the right height, then headswap with a Helms deep Rohan armour Legolas head but take the rubber hair off the back and swap it with this Mirkwood one and then voila a perfect pre Lothlorien Fellowship Legolas figure. So it’s decent in some aspects but can be massively improved....[See More]
Gandalf the Grey (Blue Sword Sheath) Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Fellowship of the Ring - Series 4 Rated 4.00 stars by Deaditor You might be surprised to hear that this is not my personal favourite Gandalf figure. Arguably it is the best of the bunch don’t get me wrong but with a lot of the Toybiz figures you can combine elements of multiple variant figures of the same character to get a perfect custom version. The positive elements of this figure are obviously the arm articulation, the head, the staff, cloak and the best hat. Unfortunately this figures base body is just your basic light up staff Gandalf figure meaning the same leg articulation and the same torso and lower tone bent at an angle. Also this might be the only Glamdring with a blue sheath but it’s also one of the most oversized ridiculous looking renditions of it. So the upper arms are good as you have shoulders movement 360 and outwards, a swivel...[See More]
I completely agree with your comments about his upper articulation, its great! And again, on his lower articulation, its a shame it has no ankle movement and wonky hips. Do you have a tutorial about how you did your Gandalf mod? Or know of a helpful URL on how to mod the LOTR toybiz line? I'm hoping to mod my Gandalf figure.
It depends how you want your Gandalf to work. I used the Balrog battle one as a base as I like how the sleeves are rubber and there’s a joint there. I’d suggest looking at my “The Fellowship of the Ring” post I did for reference but essentially it’s Balrog Gandalf with a better gandalf likeness head. Yohcould look at my Martin Septim or Manimarco customs for robe/ sleeve sculpting/ articulation as you can get double joints with a sleeve end piece. I could go back and customise my Gandalf further makinf his sleeve more solid and the articulation better but I’m fine with how he is. Hope this helps, feel free to message me if need help!
I was thinking of combining my upper torso Gandalf the Grey (Blue Sword Sheath) with the lower torso of the Balrog Battle Gandalf - as that one has the ankle articulation I want, but I prefer the head and upper torso of the Blue sword sheath Gandalf.
I've not done any sort of modding before, do you think it could work? What's the best thing to do? Just heat it up with a hair dryer and try and separate each section of both figures and try snapping the wanted sections together? Would they have the same waist peg?
Really appreciate any and all help! Thanks!
Boromir (Super Poseable) Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Fellowship of the Ring - Series 4 Rated 4.90 stars by Deaditor Finally we’re getting to the really good stuff, the stuff that makes some of these older figures better than figures made today. Here we have a nigh on perfect Boromir. He is super poseable, has great detail with a really good likeness to Sean bean and has all the accessories you’d want (sword, shield and horn) however I do have teeny tiny issues with this figure. The issues I have are the hands, paintjob and the sword. Basically knitpick issues but worth mentioning: Boromir does not need the ability to articulate his hands, as this prevents him holding anything, so I glued my figures hands sonthey could actually hold his sword. Borromirs hair has been given a black with red highlights look but he needs to be strawberry blonde/ ginger so a repaint is required. Lastly his sword and sheath...[See More]
Bilbo (Transfixed) Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Fellowship of the Ring - Series 4 Rated 5.00 stars by Deaditor There’s nothing wrong with this figure. It’s articulated enough and has a decent headsculpt. The only thing I would say is it does mean we don’t have a Bilbo in his more iconic look where he just wears a vest over a shirt rather than the jacketed look which is more outdoors or a travelling look. Personally I swapped one of these figures heads and legs with a traveling Bilbo and painted the waistcoat red with gold buttons and that did the trick. Going the actual figure itself is another nice addition to anyone’s collection nothing special but I can’t find any real faults with it, though an alternative head would have been a cool idea to have a normal Bilbo but that’s a more modern concept I suppose....[See More]
Moria Orc Archer (Evil Goblin Armor) Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Fellowship of the Ring - Series 3 Rated 4.50 stars by Deaditor I really like this figure. It looks the part and I don’t mind it’s somewhat limited articulation as it’s posed how a Moria goblin or “Moria orc” would be standing. He has arrows a bow nice detail what more could you want!...[See More]
Bilbo 111th Birthday Celebration (Black Jacket) Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Fellowship of the Ring - Series 3 Rated 3.00 stars by Deaditor There’s not much point getting this beyond completionist reasons, but by far the best aspect for me is this is where Jerry the barrel comes from! It would seem prudent to get 13 or more of these figures and then reenact the barrel sequence from the hobbit, but the barrels would be too small and require a lot of work. The figure itself isn’t anything managing as with most of the Bilbo figures the articulation is basic with swivel elbows I can’t stand and there’s 2 variants of this figure one with a darker coat which I find more accurate to he scene.so overall it’s not terrible or great but I do appreciate the barrel as a good display piece, so what does that tell you about the figure? It’s fine just not as good as a barrel I suppose haha!...[See More]
Eowyn, Shield Maiden of Rohan Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Epic Trilogy: Two Towers Rated 4.00 stars by Deaditor I like that this figure was made. It’s nothing special but it is a good representation of a Helms deep Eowyn. The sword paint job isn’t as good as the pelenor fields Eowyn and the scabbard isn’t starched to a belt so it’s just loose appropriately so for when she brandishes her sword and has a little clash with Aragorn. My only issue with this figure is the one I got had a weak neck and had broken in places and the eyes needed a paint job as she looked nothing like her. It seems Eowyn is one of these figures with bad face painting details, though I can’t account for the purple dressed one, the only face painted properly was the coronation one. This Eowyn is super articulated though the dress obviously inhibits leg movement, but that’s not such an issue with her figure I feel. To conclude...[See More]
Balrog Battle Gandalf Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Epic Trilogy: Two Towers Rated 3.50 stars by Deaditor This figure leaves something to be desired. I personally have found this figure extremely useful customising wise and it is the base to my gandalf the grey figure which is combined with each of the various Gandalf figures from the lotr and the hobbit. What you get is a fairly well articulated Gandalf with a rubbish glamdring but the staff is fine. The hair piece is stuck on his head with a hanging over his face design to represent the scene which is kind of cool and he has a base stand of the bridge that has a button that when pressed says “you shall not pass!” I think this figure is worth getting as it’s a decent representation of the scene but for me personally the parts I like are the body as it’s got the best lower robe and torso which if you then combine with the lower arms and head...[See More]
Morgul Lord Witch-King (Fiery Sword) Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Epic Trilogy: Return of the King Rated 4.00 stars by Deaditor Step 1 remove all plastic toning and replace with a basic ringwraiths cloth robes. This figure is a mixed bag for me. It’s good in detail though it’s paint job is a bit off making him look dirty rather than intimidating and his articulation is very good but he is inhibited by large vinyl robes. As I said replacing these with a basic ringwraiths robes is vital and very easy to do. Other than these issues you get a sword the infamous flail and a flaming sword. The weaponry is great I just feel the gaming sword being moulded he way it is is smaller than his regular sword and painted too silvery rather than a darker gunmetal colour as it should be. Overall it’s an awesome character to own br needs some work to make it perfect....[See More]
Mordor Orc Lieutenant Lord of the Rings - Trilogy (Toy Biz) - Epic Trilogy: Return of the King Rated 4.50 stars by Deaditor The hardest to find and most expensive of the lotr cardback figures. This figure is nicely detailed and well articulated but not perfect. For whatever reason he has a sword instead of his iconic staff sythe and the paint job is way off with an olive green complexion. This is easy to rectify it’s just worth noting. I think gothmog came out better than this one also as his ab crunch stands out s bit too much which I’m not keen on. Other than these minor issues it’s a great figure and worth getting!...[See More]
