Veranke, a Skrull princess and leader of the Dard'van religious sect, becomes the queen of the Skrull Empire after their throneworld is destroyed by Galactus, fulfilling a prophecy. While still imprisoned, Veranke declares Earth as the Skrulls' new homeland according to their scriptures. To achieve their goal, Veranke spearheads a major operation to infiltrate Earth's various facets, posing as humans and weakening the planet from within, with the intention of launching a military invasion to conquer it.
As part of her plan, Veranke assumes the identity of Jessica Drew, a superhero known as Spider-Woman, and joins the New Avengers. She also operates simultaneously within S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA as a triple agent, reporting to Nick Fury. Veranke learns of a potential threat to her rule in the form of Dorrek VIII, also known as Hulkling, who is the son of a Kree hero and a Skrull princess, and a likely heir to the Skrull throne. During the invasion, Veranke orders Hulkling's execution to eliminate the threat to her reign.
Veranke's schemes come to light during the events of the Secret Invasion storyline. She is confronted by the New Avengers, and a battle ensues. Veranke attempts to sow distrust among the heroes by defeating a Skrull posing as Wolverine in front of Iron Man. However, her plans are eventually thwarted, and she is confronted by the real Wolverine. In the final confrontation, Veranke is impaled by Wolverine and shot in the head by Norman Osborn, resulting in her death and the end of her reign as the Skrull Queen.
