Initially wrestling in North American independent circuits, Sabu quickly gained a reputation for his high-flying, daredevil style. In the early 1990s, he made a significant impact in Japan's Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling (FMW), where his hardcore matches led to the iconic scars covering his body. Sabu's career took a major turn in 1993 when he debuted in Eastern Championship Wrestling (ECW), where he became a cornerstone of the promotion. Wheeled to the ring in restraints on a gurney, Sabu was seen as a mad man, whose refusal to speak added to his enigmatic persona. Sabu's hardcore wrestling style and willingness to push the limits of pain and danger made him a standout performer in the early 90s, earning him the moniker "The suicidal, homicidal, genocidal death defying maniac."
