Matt Bentley had a varied and eventful professional wrestling career, beginning with his training at Shawn Michaels' Texas Wrestling Academy. He then competed in Japan for the Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling promotion before briefly working for Extreme Championship Wrestling in 2000-2001. After ECW closed, Bentley returned to Japan, where he wrestled under the mask of Omega Verfian.

Bentley also made some appearances in dark matches for both WWE and WCW during this time, and worked as a jobber on WWE's Velocity and Heat programs. His breakout moment came in 2002 when he had a standout match against Paul London at the Ring of Honor event Unscripted, which ROH later described as a "match of the year candidate." Bentley was also part of the stable The Group in ROH alongside Samoa Joe and C.W. Anderson.

In 2003, Bentley joined Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, quickly winning the X Division Championship in the first ever Ultimate X match. He later formed the stable The New Franchise with Shane Douglas and Traci. After losing the X Division title, Bentley continued to be a fixture in TNA's X Division, at one point becoming co-X Division Champion with Kazarian.

Bentley went through several persona changes and feuds during his TNA run, including adopting the "Maverick Matt" moniker and feuding with Lance Hoyt. In late 2006, he joined the Serotonin stable led by Raven, where he was known as "Martyr." Bentley remained with TNA until his contract expired and was not renewed in August 2007.
