Johnny Hugger, also known as Johnny the Bull and Johnny "The Bull" Stamboli, began his wrestling career in the late 1999 in World Championship Wrestling (WCW). After impressing WCW employee Diamond Dallas Page during a tryout at the Power Plant training center, Hugger enrolled in the Power Plant to train as a wrestler. He made his WCW debut as Johnny Hugger and later formed a tag team called the Mamalukes with Big Vito. They won the WCW World Tag Team Championship and had several reigns as champions. In June of 2000, JOhnny injured himself in a match against Terry Funk. When he returned in September he turned on Vito and allied himself with the Natural Born Thrillers. The Thrillers dissolved in February of 2001, and the Mamalukes reunited, tagging until WCW ended.

When WCW was purchased by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE), Hugger's contract was bought out, and he made a brief appearance as part of The Alliance. He was then sent to the Heartland Wrestling Association for further training. Hugger returned to WWF television as Johnny "The Bull" Stamboli and won the Hardcore Championship but lost it shortly after. He later joined the Full Blooded Italians faction in WWE and wrestled until his release in 2004.
