Rot Lop Fan is an inhabitant of a planet without light, and is blind because his species doesn't need sight. Katma Tui tried to recruit him for the Green Lantern Corps, but Rot Lop Fan couldn't understand her because he didn't have the concept of color (green) or light (lantern). Katma found an unorthodox way to recruit him by turning him into F-Sharp Bell, and telling him that he could turn his thoughts into solid forms.
