The Sin-Eater was a serial killer who wanted to destroy the sins of what he saw as a corrupt society. He was believed to be a man named Emil Gregg, but Gregg turned out to be a compulsive confessor, and the real Sin-Eater, Sergeant Stanley Carter, was captured by Spider-Man.
Eddie Brock had been interviewing Gregg, and was exposed as a fraud when Spider-Man captured Carter. This caused Brock to hate Spider-Man and would put him on the way to become Venom.
