Way before the G.I. Joe vs Cobra conflict, Zartan was once hired by Cobra Commander to kill Snake-Eyes, who the Commander mistakenly believed responsible for his brother's death. To reach the Arashikage clan and Snake-Eyes, Zartan became the apprentice of their swordsmith Onihashi. Zartan enjoyed so much his new work that he decided to not complete his assassination job, but Cobra Commander found and blackmailed him, so Zartan stole one of Tommy "Storm Shadow" Arashikage's arrows and killed who he believed Snake-Eyes, but actually was the Hard Master.
Currently, Zartan leads a biker gang known as the Dreadnoks, and is a member of Cobra as their expert in infiltration and disguises.
